How to Open a XAdES File and Save to PDF Online
Free. The file never leaves your device. Works on phone and computer.
Download the documents enclosed inside XML Advanced Electronic Signatures and save each file as a readable PDF. A xades to pdf converter is what you need when government portals or business partners supply signed files that will not open: SignedDocs decodes the signature right in your browser.
Save a xades to pdf document
Drop your signed file on this page. SignedDocs identifies the XML signature architecture from its structure and namespace headers:
- Enveloping XAdES files contain base64 documents inside object elements, which are extracted into clean PDF files
- Enveloped XAdES files wrap the signature inside the document XML, displaying the document directly
- Detached XAdES files store signature hashes for external files, allowing you to add the original file to verify the digest
Signer information and legal status
The signer panel displays cryptographic information written into the signature, including signer identities, issuing authorities, and signing dates. It does not certify legal validity against official trusted lists. For a binding legal check, consult the official EU DSS validator. SignedDocs is not affiliated with any government agency.

What is a .xades file?
A .xades file contains an XML Advanced Electronic Signature adhering to ETSI standards. It can envelop an embedded document, sign an enclosing XML structure, or point to an external file.
Where did I get it?
XAdES signatures are widely used across the European Union for public administration portals, public procurement, court filings, and electronic invoices.
Is it safe?
Yes. SignedDocs processes the XML locally in your browser. Nothing is transmitted to external servers. Keep the original signed file as your evidentiary record.
Why won't it open by double-click?
Standard operating systems treat .xades or raw XML as code rather than viewable documents. Specialized decoding is needed to extract embedded files.
How to open it on iPhone/Android?
Visit this page on mobile Safari or Chrome, select the .xades file from your files, and preview or download the extracted document instantly.
Is the PDF still legally valid?
The PDF you download is a copy of the content. The proof of the signature is the original file. Save that file. This page is not a legal validation.
What is the difference between .xades and .sig?
A .sig extension is a generic label that may denote either an XML-based XAdES signature or a binary CMS/CAdES signature. SignedDocs detects the true structure from the file bytes.
